Childbirth, scoliosis and postural issues, infections, previous surgeries, underlying medical conditions, and trauma can all bring on pelvic floor dysfunction and pain – which can remain long after the initial cause has been removed or healed. It can lead to tightness, pain, scar tissue, and weakness in the pelvic floor and perineum. Pelvic floor physical therapy utilizes both internal and external massage and trigger point release methods targeting the perineal tissue and pelvic muscles, appropriate stretching/ strengthening exercises, and diaphragmatic breathing/ relaxation strategies. You will also be taught self treatment techniques and exercises as part of your home program.
